Operational Update: Fitzroy Station Hours

Please avoid calling the station directly for routine reports.
As of March 22, 2026, Fitzroy Station reception is reducing its hours. It will only be open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 7:15 am and 2:45 pm.
Calls outside those hours divert to Richmond Police Station, where a small team manages the front counter, custody, and phone calls for the entire Yarra area. Calling the local station directly can unintentionally create bottlenecks. Please use the designated reporting channels outlined below instead.
Hey everyone, Hayden here.
Over the past few months, I’ve been working behind the scenes with Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) leadership and our local Yarra Neighbourhood Policing Coordinator, Sgt Jim Scanlon, to better understand how we can protect our community.
One clear, indisputable takeaway emerged from those conversations: if we want a safer neighbourhood, we need to change how we report incidents.
The guide below is designed to demystify the reporting process, clear up some common misconceptions about how policing works, and provide a frictionless cheat sheet so you always know the right service to contact.
How Police Resourcing Actually Works
The "Heat Map" Effect
Police commands have limited budgets, personnel, and patrol cars. To maximize their effectiveness, they deploy these resources based strictly on statistical data and geographical "heat maps".
The Silence Trap
If our street experiences multiple minor incidents (like car rummagings or stolen parcels) but residents don't report them thinking "it's too small for the police to care about," the official crime statistic for that street remains zero. Command sees no data, and consequently, allocates no extra patrols.
The Reporting Advantage
When every incident is officially recorded—even minor ones—our area lights up on police heat maps. This data provides our local commanders with the hard evidence they need to request additional budget, divert patrols to our streets, and investigate local trends.
By staying quiet, we effectively volunteer to miss out. Accurate reporting is the single most powerful tool we have to ensure North Fitzroy receives appropriate policing support.
The Privacy Guarantee
It is a common misconception that Crime Stoppers is a branch of the police. They are an independent registered charity. Under the Privacy Act 1988, your protections are guaranteed:
- They strip all metadata from online reports.
- They do not record IP addresses.
- Their phone lines do not have caller ID.
Sgt Jim confirmed that because they are entirely separate, the police do not and cannot find out who submitted an anonymous tip.
Modern Neighbourhood Watch
I am currently working to establish a stronger, modern NHW presence for our area. This is simply about community ties and shared awareness.
- Low (5 Mins): Go to howsafeismyplace.com.au and take the quick home security quiz.
- Medium (Forums): Attend our upcoming online MS Teams safety forums (attended by VicPol).
- High (Committee): Want to help lead? Let me know. A standard Police Check is required by NHW Victoria for committee roles.
